Creating a Dance House: A Laboratory of Imagination - open call
Under the Performing Europe project, C/U Foundation and Peter Stamer are launching an open call for applications to join a Lab to create an imagined dance space: Creating a Dance House: A Laboratory of Imagination
Close your eyes. Imagine a door in front of you. Put your hand on the doorknob and open the door. Now take a literal step into that space unfolding before you and walk around. Don't force the image, don’t police your vision. You are creating a dreamscape after all.
At a time when a strong need and heightened expectations for a new dance centre in Warsaw are felt among the local dance community, there is an acute need for fantasising. We are looking for performing artists, directors, visual artists, architects, urbanists, curators, as well as students of the humanities and arts to join a five-day Laboratory inspired by the idea of creating a virtual space for dance. As part of Creating a Dance House: A Laboratory of Imagination, instead of using conventional building materials, we will use visualisation methods and explore what it is to create a 'common imaginary'.
This research project aims to develop alternative aesthetic strategies that 'create worlds' with words, the body, and its movement. Our methodology is based on games, working with a pre-set concept of architectural planning, creating spaces with the use of choreography and performative narratives.
The Laboratory will be led by Peter Stamer, a theatre maker in the context of contemporary performing arts who shows his work in an international context. In his projects he is interested in exploring conditions for discursive and physical empowerment within given performative, social and narrative apparatuses.
The Laboratory will conclude with an open showcase, and the visual materials produced in its course will become illustrations for a publication titled 'New/Dance/House' to be launched during the C/U Festival in autumn.
The project is yet another event fulfilling the C/U Foundation's founding goal to campaign for the creation of a dance space in Warsaw. Ten years since the Foundation publicly raised the issue at the international exchange/change conference devoted to the institutional framework and financing of dance in Europe held at the Warsaw-based Koneser Culture Centre in 2008, this proposition seems ever more fanciful.
The Laboratory is part of the Performing Europe 2020 project implemented with the support of apap (advancing performing arts project) co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union and the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
Participation in the Laboratory is free. Places are limited.
